USYK-FURY REMATCH SET IN RIYADH, SAYS ALALSHIKH
Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi’s General Entertainment Authority, announced on Wednesday that the Usyk-Fury rematch is set in Riyadh.
Furthermore, the announcement was expected since Usyk and Fury signed a two-fight deal that included a rematch on October 12.
With Alalshik’s announcement, however, the October 12 date has since been moved back before the end of 2024.
Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) handed Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) his first loss after the former claimed a split decision victory in Riyadh on May 18.
The new undisputed Ukrainian world champion got the nod of two judges (114-113, 115-112) to snatch the title away from Fury.
USYK-FURY REMATCH TO OFFER ‘ANOTHER HISTORICAL FIGHT,’
Additionally, the Usyk-Fury rematch will be “another historical fight,” Alalshikh said.
“The world will watch another historical fight again,” the tycoon said.
“Our commitment to boxing fans continues…We hope you enjoy it,” he added.
Middle East Boxing Commission president Jose Mohan told ESPN that Usyk was handed a medical suspension until July 2.
Fury, on the other hand, was handed a mandatory one week of rest.
Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, defended the commission’s decision on the two fighters.
“Both of them at the moment are both (medically) suspended because of how much the fight took out of them,” Warren said.
“It is a tough fight. Those guys were in an epic, epic battle,” he added.
FURY INSISTS HE WON BUT OFFERS NO EXCUSES
Fury insisted that he beat Fury but he offered no excuses for the result.
“I believe I won the fight, but I’m not going to sit here and make excuses,” Fury said.
“I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of the. What can you do?” he asked.
The 35-year-old British heavyweight fighter, furthermore, is relieved a rematch clause was forged between him and Usyk.
“We’ve got a rematch clause. But make no mistake, I won that fight … and I’ll be back,” Fury said.
