TSZYU WITHDRAWS FROM ORTIZ FIGHT DUE TO SCALP CUT
Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs) was forced to withdraw from the Ortiz fight due to a scalp cut he sustained in his recent fight against Sebastian Fundora (21-1, 13 KOs).
The 29-year-old Australian fighter suffered a deep gash on his hairline in Round 2 of his fight against Fundora.
Fundora won via split decision in March to claim the WBO and WBC light middleweight titles.
The Tszyu-Ortiz bout was supposed to be a part of the undercard of the Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov title fight.
Additionally, this means that the Australian cannot face off Ortiz for the scheduled August 3 bout.
PROMOTER DISAPPOINTED BY TSZYU WITHDRAWAL
Promoter George Rose, meanwhile, was disappointed by Tszyu’s decision.
“We are bitterly disappointed with the setback, and Tim is extremely frustrated after a great pre-camp with Kostya,” Rose said.
“Ultimately, it was his body and medical professionals telling him he wasn’t ready yet,” he added.
Furthermore, Tszyu was told by his doctor that he cannot resume full-contact sparring yet.
“He (Tszyu) showed everyone that he’ll fight through anything against Fundora, but this decision was taken out of his hands, to be honest,” Rose said.
BOHACHUK EYED AS REPLACEMENT FOR TSZYU AS ORTIZ’S OPPONENT
Bohachuk, ESPN’s No.6 junior middleweight is being eyed as a replacement for Tszyu to fight Ortiz.
Ortiz was assured that he would remain as part of the Crawford-Madrimov undercard despite Tszyu’s withdrawal.
Bohachuk fought on the Tszyu-Fundora undercard, when he posted a decision win over Brian Mendoza.
Bohachuk’s promoter Tom Loeffler vouched for his ward’s readiness to fight Ortiz despite the short notice.
“Serhii is in a great position as the WBC interim champion and mandatory challenger, but is definitely interested in the fight with Vergil,” Loeffler told ESPN.
“Serhii lives and trains in LA, as does Vergil, so it would be the perfect L.A. fight if the fight can be made,” he added.
