Pacquiao comeback window slowly closing

The eight-division world champion last fought professionally in 2021, losing his WBA Welterweight World Title to Yordenis Ugas.

Pacquiao has been linked with a number of opponents, including Barrios.

However, the proposal hit a snag when it was announced that Barrios would instead defend his belt next against Abel Ramos on the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul undercard in November.

Barrios’ trainer, Bob Santos, told World Boxing News that the competing on Tyson-Paul’s undercard was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“[The Pacquiao fight] couldn’t come to fruition for whatever reason. We were in negotiations. I know Pacquiao wanted to fight. We wanted to fight. It would have been a great world title fight, but they just couldn’t come together in the time frame.

“This opportunity came with Netflix and Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson. This is not just a boxing event but one of the biggest events. The numbers are going to be insane.”

“Running out of time”

Meanwhile, MP Promotions advisor Sean Gibbons told World Boxing News that the potential bout could be “running out of time.”

This is due to Pacquiao recently filing his candidacy to run for Senate in the Philippines for the 2025 elections.

Pacquiao, who previously ran for president in 2022, is now seeking to return to the Senate.

“Let’s see what happens [with Barrios after his fight]. We are running out of a little time as ‘Sir Manny’ declared his candidacy for the Senate in 2025, so he’s tied up from February to May 11, when the election is,” Gibbons said.

“But, anything can happen – after. For sure, that’s [the Barrios title chance], but it is still the fight.”
