CRAWFORD ‘KILLS’ WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION FOR REFUSING TO VACATE 2 BELTS
Furthermore, Crawford “kills” the welterweight division for refusing to vacate two title belts, said boxing analyst Paulie Malignaggi.
It doesn’t help that the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) are not taking action.
“Doing stuff like the sanctioning bodies (WBA and WBO) do where they don’t strip guys and keep the wheel turning,” Malignaggi told ProBox TV.
“You also kill the interest because you got a guy (Crawford) that is holding two of the four welterweight titles who is never going to fight at welterweight again,” he added.
Moreover, Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) has not defended his WBA belt for more than a year.
Incidentally, he has been inactive with his WBO belt for a year since he claimed the title over Jeff Horn in 2018.
DESIRE TO WIN TITLES IN DIFFERENT WEIGHT DIVISION FACTORS IN FOR CRAWFORD
Moreover, Crawford’s pronouncements that he desires to win titles in a different weight division have factored in his inactivity.
Crawford is looking to claim belts in the 154-pound and 168-pound divisions for a better payday and cement his place in history.
The American is going after Canelo Alvarez at 168lbs and snatch all four of his titles at super middleweight.
Meanwhile, Crawford is busy training for his upcoming fight against Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) fon August 3.
Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr described a Crawford-Alvarez fight would be a “good payday” for the former.
“I think that would be a good payday for Crawford, and he deserves it from all the stuff he’s been through,” Ruiz said.
LACK OF INTEREST IN WELTERWEIGHT CAUSED BY GREATS RETIRING, MOVING UP, MALIGNAGGI SAYS
Furthermore, there is a lack of interest in the welterweight division lately.
This may have been caused by some of the greats from the previous generation retiring or moving up, Malignaggi said.
The analyst cited Manny Pacquiao and Shawn Porter as those who are no longer active at welterweight.
“A lot of guys have exited, some guys have retired, some have moved up,” Malignaggi said.
“And it doesn’t help that two of the sanctioning bodies (WBA and WBO) because you don’t allow the wheel to turn,” he added.
Meanwhile, Diaz defended Crawford’s decision to attempt to succeed in higher-weight divisions.
“I think Crawford is a smaller opponent, but you can’t criticize his speed. His skills, his speed, is unbelievable,” Ruiz said.
